Are you overwhelmed by all the opinions and options that exist out there in the self-help industry? Often the options feel like you need an abundance of time, motivation, commitment, will-power and equipment to achieve success.
This strategy is something so achievable that it can literally take you a few minutes a day and can have a profound impact on your life. I call it mindset snacking.
Mindset snacking allows you to implement small actions to change your thinking and life, in a much simpler and achievable way.
Let me start by asking you a question. Are you a snacker?
If you are, this concept will be easy for you to grasp. If you’re not, let me use this scenario to illustrate what’s to come.
Real life mindset draining scenario
Imagine this.
It’s a busy day for you! You didn’t have breakfast, didn't have lunch because time was so scarce and the priorities for you just haven’t gotten done. Each minute passes by with no nourishment to your spirit and your body will begin to fade. You need fuel to get your mind back in the game, restore your bounce.
Deeper and deeper into the funk you fall.
Could you imagine that during the day you had a few snacks along the way, banana, apple, maybe some berries or a smoothie. What more could you have achieved?
Now apply this to your mindset.
Same busy day, same priorities, same lack of time. No time to sit down for an hour and refocus your mindset in a positive purposeful way. You start to walk down that negative mindset spiral catastrophising each scenario as you do but you make time for mindset snacking throughout the day to ensure things stay on track. As you ‘snack’ you turn around, start walking back up those mindset stairs in a powerful way, each snack brings clarity, purpose and the best, most powerful version of you!
Got your attention now!?
What is mindset snacking?
Before I tell you what this is. Let me tell you what it is not.
Mindset snacking is not about having a positive mindset, where you continually search for the positive and silver lining - sometimes in a naive way, sometimes in a way where you don’t face the truth and stay stuck in the present form.
Mindset snacking is about having constant, small, manageable habits that improve your mindset over the course of the day or week. Effectively, snacking through the big changes you need in your life, one bite at a time.
It is a perfect strategy for you if life is busy and you really only get to reset on weekends or holidays every few months.
Why mindset snacking over traditional mindset change strategies?
Glad you asked! Because this theory is founded on the science that our mood follows our actions.
Action creates a change in thoughts, feelings and perceptions of ourselves and life in general.
Here are some examples of how you could use mindset snacking, take note of the very specific categories to focus on:
Changing your mood and perspective.
Doing hard things.
Creating your future self and pursuing your potential.
The 3 most common mindset categories people struggle with
As a life and mindset coach, I see this all the time. My clients come to me with different backgrounds, lives, problems, traumas, goals, ideas etc…. but there are similarities across them. Almost in every case, what they lack are those 3 things. And you might too!
1. Changing your mood and perspective.
This is about the present moment. Grabbing a quick mood snack to shift your mood or alter your perspective on a situation in the now to lift the clouds on your day quickly.
2. Doing hard things.
This snack is about pushing your boundaries and comfort zone, this is where your growth is found and leads you towards feeling more confident in your abilities and yourself in general.
3. Creating your future self and pursuing your potential.
We get stuck in the cycle of what we have always done, this leads to us repeating and returning to the same version of us. This mindset is about being purposeful to create the new and best you.
So, how do you use this in real life to pursue your true potential?
Mindset Snacking: the strategy in action
Mindset snacking to change your mood and perspective
When you're feeling stressed or anxious, take a few minutes to focus on your breathing and positive thoughts.
When you're feeling down, listen to a song that inspires you.
When you're feeling negative about yourself, write down five things you're grateful for.
When you can’t agree with something, take time out to view this a different way.
Mindset snacking to help you do hard things
When you're feeling overwhelmed, break your task down into smaller, more manageable steps.
When you're feeling stuck, take a break and come back to the problem later.
Challenge yourself. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can help you grow and develop.
Use a mantra to push you forwards for 60 seconds to gain momentum. E.g. “I choose to be here”
Mindset snacking to create your future self and pursue your potential
Create clear and challenging goals to have a sense of purpose and direction for each 6-month period of the year.
Learn something new. Learning new things can help you stay engaged and curious about your world and where you wish to be in it.
When you’re feeling lost, believe in yourself. The most important thing you can do for your mindset is to believe in yourself and your abilities.
Importantly, it’s crucial to find mindset snacks that work for you.
What works for one person may not work for another, we all have different values, beliefs and experiences that make up our unique story. So, experiment and find what helps you improve your mindset within the 3 categories above.
It takes time and consistency to see results.
Don't give up if you don't see results immediately.
Important: mindset snacking is not a replacement for therapy or other forms of professional help but mindset snacking can be a great way to supplement your treatment and improve your mindset in the meantime.
