Leaving a Legacy at Work Isn’t Just for Executives — Here’s How Anyone Can Do It

Legacy isn’t about ego. It’s about contribution.

That’s the powerful truth explored in CPA Australia’s INTHEBLACK article, How everyone can leave a legacy at work, where I had the privilege to share my thoughts on legacy-building and leadership.

In today’s dynamic workplace, legacy isn’t reserved for those nearing retirement or sitting in the C-suite. It’s something we can all shape, starting right now — regardless of our title or tenure. From creating psychologically safe workplaces to mentoring emerging leaders, there are meaningful ways each of us can leave an impact that outlasts our tenure.

In the article, I talk about one of the exercises I use in coaching called "tombstone coaching" — a tool that invites reflection on what we want to be remembered for. If you’re not proud of the story that would be told about your time in the workplace today, now is the perfect moment to change the narrative.

Legacy starts with intention. Whether it’s a small habit like giving someone your full attention in a meeting, or something bigger like building a mentoring circle or running a wisdom-sharing session, your actions compound over time. As Prina Shah powerfully puts it, “Your legacy isn’t built in a single action or initiative. It’s the sum of consistent, intentional behaviours.”

If you’re wondering where to begin, consider this: what would your colleagues say about your contribution if you left tomorrow? And what could you start doing today to make that answer something you’re proud of?

Head over to INTHEBLACK to read the full article and dive deeper into the tools and mindset that help shape a meaningful legacy — not just for you, but for the people who will come after you.
