4 tips from a life coach on how to choose a life coach

How to choose a life coach?

I could just answer the question and turn it into a sales pitch for me (hi, I’m a life coach) or I could tell you the truth. And the truth is, it depends on what you need to change and focus on!

Long story short, you could get many answers to this question, depending on who you talk to.

What is a life coach?

A life coach in the general sense of the term is an all encompassing coach that can help in multiple areas of life. Unlike a career coach that will focus on your professional path only or a fitness who will look to change your physical body and maybe do some mindset work (...and all other specialised coaches out there), a life coach looks at your life in a broader way to tackle your inner, deeper limiting beliefs and existing behaviours that stop you being the best version of yourself.

There are many different types of life coaches out there and who you turn to will depend on what you're looking to achieve and the coach's values, specialisation and methodology.

4 things to keep top of mind when looking for a life coach

1️⃣  It's about you!

That initial chat with a coach should be about him or her getting to know you and understanding your challenges and then, them explaining their philosophy or methodology to tackle that as opposed to a sales pitch that sells you a solution before knowing what you want out of the experience.

2️⃣  Don't be deterred by the price!

Some coaches are affordable, some are expensive and some are simply out of reach for most. It's the case in every industry but more often than not, you also get what you pay for. Life coaching and true life-long change is no quick fix and an experienced life coach with a successful track rate will be priced accordingly. It is an investment in yourself. Intangible, yes, but great returns are almost guaranteed if you put in the work.

3️⃣  The life coach's specialisation, values and mission are important!

Because it gives you an idea into their why - why they do what they do and their backstory. Credentials, certifications, buzz words and a killer Insta profile are a great start but finding a life story you can relate to and similar values that resonate with you will help you choose someone you can create a bond with throughout the coaching process. It is crucial. One-on-one life coaching is a fairly intimate experience and you need to be able to trust the coach you choose so they can lead on the right path for you.

4️⃣  Look for original ideas!

And by that I don't mean original as in 'out there' ideas, I mean original as in 'the source of their own' ideas. There are coaches out there that have risen to the top and are known to most (the big names like Tony Robbins, Jay Shetty...). The coaches to the stars, the ones most of us truly could not afford. Most other less known life coaches (yours truly 👋) will get inspiration from those masters' ideas BUT there is a difference between getting inspiration from them and plainly regurgitating their stuff. You want the coach you choose to have their own ideas, to be able to come up with their own thoughts and powerful takes on things. Take a look at their blogs, newsletters or socials, and see if what they put out is original content or if it's full of quotes and ideas mainly from someone else (🚩).
