Life Doesn’t Need to Be Perfectly Balanced

Behaviour: Chasing perfect balance

Many of us believe that life needs to be in perfect balance—everything in harmony, neatly aligned, and running like a well-oiled machine. I used to think this was something vital to strive for but the truth? Perfect balance might be holding you back.

If you’re striving for growth, aiming to achieve a big goal, or even just trying to start making progress, waiting for perfect balance might be an excuse in disguise. Life is messy, overwhelming, and chaotic at times—and that’s okay.

Maybe you’re worried that chasing your vision will mean giving up on things you love forever. But life doesn’t have to be one or the other.

You can go all in on what matters now, knowing balance will come back later.

Strategy: Embrace seasons, not balance

Instead of striving for constant balance, understand that life moves in seasons. There will be times when one priority takes the lead, and others fall to the backburner. What matters is being intentional about what you focus on and knowing when it’s time to re-align.

Here’s how to approach it:

1. Accept that an out-of-balance life is okay (for a while)

When you’re chasing something big—a new job, building a business, or training for a goal—life won’t feel perfectly balanced. The key is recognising this as temporary.

For example, during my ultramarathon training, social life and extra sleep took a backseat to my goal. But once the race was done, I brought balance back by shifting my focus to other areas. You can do the same. Sometimes, all you need to do is recognise that you don’t need motivation—you just need the discipline to go in and out of balance as necessary.

2. Redefine your priorities with a life audit

Use these nine areas to assess where you’re at and choose two to focus on. You need to understand your non-negotiables and identify what’s important with clear boundaries then, define two clear goals for each:

  • Family

  • Friends

  • Finances

  • Personal growth

  • Health

  • Impact on society

  • Career/craft

  • Relationships (love)

  • Fun/recreation

3. Visualise your glass and plastic balls

Picture yourself juggling 10 balls in the air. Four are made of glass—they must never be dropped. The other six are plastic—they can bounce away for a while and be picked up later.

What are your four glass balls? Examples might include:

  • Your health routine

  • Quality time with your partner

  • Focused work on your business

  • Daily reflection or mindfulness

4. Create energy and focus, not balance

Balance can feel like a never-ending battle. Instead, ask yourself: "Where can I increase my energy and master my focus?"

Define what recharges your batteries—whether it’s a passion project, time in nature, or meaningful connection—and build it into your day.

Balance isn’t the goal—alignment is

Life won’t always be perfectly balanced, but it doesn’t need to be. By focusing on your priorities, accepting life’s seasons, and knowing when to re-align, you can create progress without guilt or overwhelm.

Ask yourself this week: Where can I focus my energy and intention?
